Changes to Sponsored Work Visa - July 2025

On 1 July 2025, the Home Office confirmed significant changes to the Skilled Worker immigration route, along with other sponsored work categories. These updates were first announced in the Government’s immigration White Paper in May (see our blog post here), and will now be implemented on 22 July 2025. Not all of the White Paper suggestions are being implemented at this stage; here’s a breakdown of the key changes which employers and prospective applicants should be aware of.

1. Skill Threshold Raised to RQF Level 6

The skill requirement for Skilled Worker visas is increasing from Regulation Qualifications Framework (RQF) Level 3 (A-level equivalent) to RQF Level 6 (degree level). This means that more than 100 occupations currently eligible under RQF 3–5 will no longer qualify for sponsorship after 22 July 2025 – only those occupations which meet the RQF Level 6 threshold will remain eligible. Some exceptions will apply, such as roles listed on the Immigration Salary List or the newly introduced Temporary Shortage Occupation List; both lists are subject to periodic review. Importantly, anyone applying for the first time after 22 July 2025 using the Temporary Shortage Occupation List (i.e. a lower-skilled role) will not be able to bring dependant family members to the UK (with very limited exceptions for children) - and must also meet the new salary thresholds outlined below.

2. Salary Thresholds Increased

The following minimum salary thresholds will apply from 22 July 2025:

Note: in some cases, the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code minimum will be higher than the category minimum and vice versa – in all cases, the higher number must be paid. It’s worth noting that SOC code salary thresholds are also experiencing an increase.

3. Transitional Arrangements

Individuals already in the Skilled Worker route are not required to meet the new RQF Level 6 skill level threshold – the new rules apply to new applicants from 22 July 2025 only. Those currently on Skilled Worker visas can continue to renew their visas, switch sponsors and take supplementary employment in lower-skilled roles. Importantly, applications will be assessed under current rules if submitted before 22 July 2025 (or if the Certificate of Sponsorship has been assigned to the applicant before this date, where relevant). It is worth noting that the salary level increases will apply at the next renewal - some sponsors may choose to sponsor for longer periods for this reason.

4. Steps Employers Can Take

With these changes about to take place, it is important for businesses to:

  • Review current and future roles to confirm eligibility under new skill and salary thresholds;

  • Assign Certificates of Sponsorship before 22 July 2025 for pending applications in order to benefit from the current rules - and consider longer visas to benefit from the current salary thresholds for a longer period, if needed;

  • Plan for adjusted salary structures as needed to remain compliant with updated minimums; and

  • Re-evaluate hiring strategies, particularly for roles that will fall outside of RQF Level 6 and are not on the Temporary Shortage List/Immigration Salary List and must therefore be hired from the local workforce.
